The Art of Work

IN DEVELOPMENT: The Art of Work is a unique documentary that combines strong narrative storytelling and the visually poetic style of films like Baraka and the Qatsi trilogy. The feature-length film will examine humanity’s relationship with work set against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving world in which the old are struggling to pass down their antiquated trades and the young carry the burden and privilege of paving the way for future generations. What all have in common is the struggle to define themselves and maintain a sense of meaning in the ever increasingly competitive socio-economic landscape.
These themes will be examined through the eyes of several unique individuals who offer new definitions of work – people who are not defined by the work they do but rather define themselves through their work. Their respective trades may not be glamorous or perceived by most as particularly meaningful or relevant, but it is the marriage of their soul and the work they perform that offers unique insight into how the Chinese and humanity at large can respond to the age-old struggle to find meaning in a working world.
Through a lyrical approach to storytelling in which the subject’s meditations are scattered amidst a minimalist soundtrack, and through a vivid and cinematically poetic aesthetic, The Art of Work, will offer audiences a transcendent and poignant experience.
