Illuminations

Illuminations is a contemplative portrait of celebrated avant-garde filmmakers Nathaniel Dorsky and Jerome Hiler, whose nearly sixty-year romantic, creative, and devotional partnership has unfolded largely outside the structures of commercial cinema. Working with silent 16mm film, light, duration, and attention, Dorsky and Hiler have each created singular bodies of work that ask cinema to function less as representation than as a way of seeing. Their films offer a radically attentive encounter with the world, asserting cinema's potential to become not only an art form, but a wisdom form.

Filmed over four years, Illuminations enters the quiet life they have built together: a life shaped by love, solitude, artistic discipline, daily ritual, and a shared faith in the perceptual and spiritual possibilities of film. From underground screenings in the 1960s to sold-out retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, the film traces a lifelong devotion to healing through perception, light, and presence.

Rather than offering a conventional biography, Illuminations seeks to honor the sensibility of its subjects formally. Moving through intimate conversations, archival traces, present-day observation, and encounters with their luminous work, the film creates a portrait of two artists who have refused to separate art from love, practice from being, or seeing from living. At once a love story, an artist portrait, and an inquiry into cinema itself, Illuminations asks what it means to remain faithful to a vision over a lifetime.
